As a matter of fact, when I bought this house 15 years ago, ALL the cabinets in the house were this type. I'm not sure what they're called, but I know they were VERY popular about 20 years ago (which is when my kitchen was remodeled-before I owned it).
Not quite my style... I definately would have chosen something else. White laminate? Not me.

My entire kitchen had these beauties, too. (nothin' against those that have them and love them, mind you). But I really wanted something else. Luckily, the cabinets themselves are wood- it's just the doors that are faux. So about 12 years ago, I had someone come in to give me a quote on replacing the doors. An hour later and $7500 in debt looming, I picked myself up from the floor and thought again. Again, lucky for me, my Dad is an awesome carpenter. Self taught, just like me in most of the things I do (both of my parents are pretty awesome, come to think of it).

This is what I have in my kitchen now.... SOLID OAK.....and GORGEOUS. All I had to do was pay for the wood and buy a new router bit for my Dad (kinda' burned the other one up!) and I got all new cabinets for under $500 bucks! Love you, Dad-you're the best.

He even made the fake fronts for the drawers that really aren't. All I had to do is replace the hardware.

For the most part, my house has been on the "country" side for the past 20 years. After my divorce, my tastes started to change (in addition to lifestyle, money, blah blah blah). I re-designed my dining room a year ago like this; and just finished my home office here in styles that are kinda' out of my element. I know, just call me "rebel divorcee lookin' for a change" (sounds like an ad for the personals...NOT).

If my Dad were able, I know he'd be here tomorrow to hook me up. I'm just glad he's here period. So I'm thinkin' about making a few changes myself on the cheap. Look out master bath.

I'll be making friends with my new best bud... Kilz in a can. LOVE IT!

I'll let ya' know how it turns out.

If You're Scared...Say You're Scared!

This is the current project we're working on... and if these pics don't scare ya', I don't know what would! This is my washer/dryer area.... actually, it's not so much an area as it is a large closet. A large closet that is an eyesore, that is conveniently located in my kitchen for all to see. I know, you're wishing you had one too. I especially like the semi-blue walls (but only on some and only so far) and the capped off pipes from the old hot water heater that are just kinda' hanging out there. I can't tell you the pleasure I get just opening up those big ole bifold louver doors to do my laundry here.... joy, I tell you.

Another lovely wall behind the dryer. I will not tell you how many socks I found here.... let's just say the mystery of the "sock graveyard" has been solved!

This beautiful shelf holds all those laundry essentials... this, of course, is only functional if you purchase products in doll-house sized proportions. Anything larger resides ON TOP of the washer/dryer (watch out for that spin cycle).

But this..... this is my ABSOLUTE favorite part....

This is the air duct to the enclosed porch on the opposite side... yes, that is electrical tape holding it together and yes, it just kinda' hangs there without any support. Oh, and that area above the electrical panel...that's what is left of the CONTACT PAPER (that's right...) that surrounds the top and bottom. Who knew you used contact paper instead of drywall? There's a novel idea.

I won't tell you the contractor's name that put together this little jewel... but here's a hint: he doesn't live here anymore..... ya' know?

Luckily, I'm much loved by someone with a little more, shall we say, attention to detail....and anything but lazy. The tongue & grove boards have been purchased, and installation has begun. I wonder if this will change my outlook on the whole laundry thing...NOT.

Office Revamp Complete!

$99 file cabinet from Staples (and free shipping) and I'm IN there! Latteral file drawers have a lot more room than regular letter size, so I can fit everything in one piece. The sorter and in/out box are about 15 years old... I bought them at Sam's club (along with a file basket in another picture). I thought they could use some sprucing up, too, so I painted the wood frames on each black and left the wicker alone. Pretty cool to me!

This is my "re-purposed" chair (one of two) and my now organized desk. I made runners for all the pieces in here to match the chairs (cuts down on scratches and what not, and hides a multitude of sins on my old desk!). Artwork courtesy of Carson!

Printer stand (also known as a dresser). You can't tell from this angle, but I painted the fronts of the three drawers with black paint, too. Ties it into the other stuff in the room.

Sewing machine (love this cabinet- I've had it since I was a girl. Thanks M&D). This is a second chair from another room in the house that I painted black and covered in the same material... sure did get my money's worth out of that buy from WalMart!

This is the basket file drawer... so to speak.. that goes with the other two pieces. And I always hit the flower section (funny how it's right at the front door-impulse buy, anyone?). One store has a really nice floral department... you can get gladiolas, delphinium, lilies...you name it. At this time of year, it's usually roses- which is okay, too. I just like treating myself every couple of weeks, and putting fresh flowers out makes me feel better.

Sometimes they fade before they open up... that's okay, too. I just leave them in water until they dry out. Sometimes they'll stay whole, and sometimes they fall apart. But the ones that dry well?....

They become this... I love this arrangement in by bedroom. It's hard to tell from the picture, but the roses actually dried "yellowish" with pink tips.. and the hydrangea are green and purple.

I love these... I cut them from my sister's shrub last year (she gets zillions blooming every year!). These were actually BLUE when they were blooming, but dried this beautiful shade of green. A lot of the furniture and stuff are old pieces from other parts of my house that have wound up here. This chair is a prime example. (and look... there's another one of those cables hangin' out- Geeze! oh, and disregard the lovely stains on the chair pad... kids, ya know?)

This is it without the chair pad- even worse! There is like NO cushion left! Those of us with bony butts (and no, that is not a good thing) cannot sit on something this hard for hours on end. Your legs go numb after a while and you have to get up and walk around to get the circulation going! Needless to say, this was one of the first things I worked on this weekend.

I pulled it apart, added a LOT of batting for cushioning, painted it (who new Kilz came in a spray can? LOVE IT), and re-covered it in some of the fabric left over from another project.

This is the after, and I am much happier sitting "here" than "there". Ignore that stuff in the background- the whole room is a work in progress. But for those of you who have never recovered a chair and would like to, it's really a simple process. So go forth... and recover!

I Love to Collect...

I'm a glassware junkie... this I know about myself. It's hard to tell, but they turned out pretty cool. I can't wait to put them up here and see what a difference it will make in all the "white space". I've also found a few baskets (go figure) that I could re-purpose with a little black spray paint to tie everything together.

When I painted the small alcove around the front window, I went with the same blue that I used on the opposite wall in the great room. Now I'm thinking a nice soft yellow.... candlestick lamp with red shade.... black accents to match the marble counters... a little "bistro feel", maybe.

I also found some way cool upholstery fabric (at WalMart of all places) with a cream background and a tan stripe... just $3.77 a yard! I'll use this for new cushions on 2 of the small occasional chairs in the great room. Right now they're sporting a lovely BROCADE fish scene... err, not quite me. Can't wait to finish that little project!

I just finished the fronts for our annual Easter Egg Hunt invites- hard to believe it's less than a month away! I'd better get my PAAS kit and basket stuff... as a matter of fact, I think I STILL have remnants of that oh-so-wonderful fake grass stuff embedded in the nooks and crannies of the boys' rooms. Something about that stuff makes it almost impossible to get rid of! Maybe this year we'll forgo the grass... that sounds like a plan.

View From Corolla

As many of you may not be aware... my family and I are extremely fortunate to live on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. I need some inspiration here, so send me your ideas. And what does everyone else do with the massive tangle of wires you're stuck with between the computer, printer, scanner....on and on?

Maybe it's just my mother and I... but I have a real issue with cords of any kind being visible. Call me nuts, but I will go to great lengths to hide them behind/beneath anything close by just so I don't see black cords everywhere (and, no... white ones aren't any better!). Perfect example... one year I bought this really pretty Christmas wall hanging and I thought it was so cool because it came with a small string of Christmas lights that you inserted from behind into already cut holes so that it lit up. Unfortunately, the cord hung down about a foot and a half past the bottom to the plug below. Drove me NUTS every time I looked at it. And it was in my hallway, so I couldn't jam anything in front of the cord to hide it or we'd be tripping all over the place.

I ended up taking the lights out and just using it as a plain wall hanging... my sister cracks up every time she sees the one at my Mom's house (beautifully displayed with the cord hidden BEHIND her Christmas village) -nothing like paying twice what you normally would for something you don't use to being with!

I know... NUTS! So what's in your office?

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://erstwhileindulgences.blogspot.com/2008/02/ill-show-you-mine-if-you-show-me-yours.html' title='I'll Show You Mine... In the mean time I have been getting pretty stoked about the possibilities the future may bring for me (and my kids) and as a result the pressure has been on to get my home office in order.

My "office" is "home" to my sewing machine; fragrances, ingredients & molds (by the boat load!) for the soap I make; labels, paper products & packaging like you can't imagine; and my desktop computer (with very little desk to work on!). Oh.... and about 25 baskets of various types, sizes & designs hanging on the walls... I LOVE baskets for some reason. Especially old ones. But I digress..

What I NEED is office-stuff, like a real file cabinet to keep things organized (as opposed to the large basket I'm currently using for files); space designated for a little more hardware that's needed; better lighting... the list goes on. And while I'm excited at the prospect of getting it together, I can't stand the thought of my home office not looking like the rest of my home... ya' know?

Even at my real job, my desk area has baskets on top of my credenza, a really nice desk lamp, wicker in/out boxes.... just stuff I need in a shape or style I like. I'm trying to reconstruct my office at home into something practical yet eye appealing to me.

I found these on-line (check in out here http://www.carriagegifts.com/vindex.html) and thought they were perfect. Practical but pretty (I know, how girly!). But this way if it takes me a while to save up for the actual file cabinet, at least I can leave these out without having to look at the good ole' manila files & folders. MUCH better!

Indulgent Giveaway...Week 2

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_j_pSTTSHEQ8/R7w-IcB0m2I/AAAAAAAAAJE/PBkf6TaLjaY/s400/blush.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5169074786998197090" />
Okay, you lurkers, I know you're out there! Be one of the first 5 (I'm slowly, realistically, lowering my expectations...) to post a comment and receive a little something just for you (or someone you care about). Cone incense (a dozen total) in a cream pillow box and they smell wonderful. I light one in my bedroom each night when I get home from work just to do something nice for myself. So do something nice just for you & leave me a comment! (bad photo, I know... I'll try again later)

After dinner last night, I finished the first four of the wine label frames. They turned out really well so I think I'll make a few more in various sizes. I had a couple of cheap Dollar Store frames that were white with a gold trim, so I grabbed my black spray paint and went to work. I was surprised at how well those turned out too. Can't wait to set everything up this weekend... I'll keep you posted!

Kitchen Craft Project

It's hard to believe that February is almost over... in another couple of months it will be Memorial Day and the start of another rental season here, on the Outer Banks. May is also when the house in Corolla becomes a "rental house" once again, and will remain so until the fall.

Over the winter we've been working on the interior of the house... nothing major at this point, but some interior painting in the bedrooms and bathrooms, new bedding & window treatments and accessories to make things feel a little more "plush" and not so stark!

The master bedroom and bath are done now, and I'm moving onto the kitchen.

This is the "before".... not at all me. Too white and no personality. Definately needs some fixin' up! I've already replaced the two bar stools shown with a couple in a dark, almost black, wood that have tall backs and are much more comfortable. And what a difference that made... the dark color of the wood really brings out the contrast in the wood trim, white cabinets and dark (but beautiful) marble counters. I've also painted the small alcove where the arched window faces the street in a light blue to match the opposite wall in the great room and now I'm moving up-above the cabinets that is! All those white walls and white cabinets is just too much- I need something to bring the eye down a little.

As well as the dark stools worked out, I'm thinking of framing some vintage/various wine labels and putting them above the cabinets to break up the mototony a little bit. I've scanned a few already and bought some black wooden frames yesterday. I'll finish everything up this week and post some "after" shots after this weekend.

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5168777201599159074" style="DISPLAY: block; Maybe you know someone who needs a "little something" to brighten their day...whatever.

Just be one of the first six people to leave a comment (six is my lucky number, and therefore should be yours as well) and I'll send you one of my Ocean Breeze Linen Sprays. I make them in a variety of fragrances, but this is one of the best. Nice and clean without being sweet. Spray it on your pillows before you go to bed, or around the house whenever you like. You'd be amazed at the difference it can make.

Attractively packaged in a 4 oz. aluminum spray bottle, it's yours just for leaving a comment. Just make sure to leave your name and mailing address. And check back each week... there will be something new to indulge in just for yourself!

Understanding the logic of a 12 year old's mind...

Me: "did you call Patrick?"
12 yo: "yeah...but he didn't answer"
"do they have an answering machine?"
"yeah"
"Did you leave a message?"
"no"
"Well, why not?"

"Mom- if they're not answering their phone, how will they know I'm trying to call?"

HUH?

To all of the sixth grade teachers in Dare County..... It's just shy of a few minutes past sunset and the sky looked awesome. Unless it's cloudy/overcast in the afternoon, the sunset is totally amazing every day. I won't tell you how many pics I've taken in the past, but I will say they are all different but equally beautiful.

Specifically, the view is of the Currituck Sound; Monteray Shores, Corolla. That's the Outer Banks for those not in the know. About a mile or so up the road is the Currituck Beach Lighthouse (another awesome sight) and the historic Whalehead Club. I'll have to share some photos of those with you soon.

I took this one about two minutes later...evidence of what a mere 60 seconds can do. Gotta' be quick around here! Of course if my 10 year-old had the camera, we'd be looking at pictures of "three toed deer tracks" or something else he's convinced is out there. Or maybe the fox that chased him a couple of weeks ago... I think that's the only time I've ever seen him run away from an animal. Scared him half to death and he's still talking about it!

" Better days ahead".... no they're not comatose (although they look like it!). I have some "unfinished business" I left hanging around!

When the holidays are over and spring is still a few months off, I start gettin' antsy to start a new project. I find myself walking through the rooms in my house, plotting out what I can do, more importantly what I can afford, and how much time all these little projects will take. Unfortunately, the timing thing gets me every time!

"Hmmm. what about repainting the living room... couldn't take more than a weekend. What is it? A little tape, a little paint and I'm done". The reality check always comes MUCH later.

Reality #1- the "special painters' tape" you just blew $10 on WILL NOT STICK to baseboards that have not seen the light of day in months (and months). You will have to CLEAN the room first. This bothers me on many levels. I tend to make a huge mess during any project I take on (big or small) and cleaning something that I know will only get even messier later, bugs me.

Reality #2- Rooms with an 8 foot ceiling are much easier (and quicker) to paint than, say, rooms with 10 foot celings. Hey, lets factor in that a person who is deathly afraid of heights will take MUCH longer to paint said walls when trying to balance on a rickety ladder that should have been tossed out a while ago. Enter Son1 and Son2..."Mom.... why are your legs shaking? Do ya want ME to hold the latter?" Always answer this question with a polite "no" while quickly descending the ladder.

Reality #3- When a fresh coat of paint on your walls looks great.... your ceiling will look pitiful (see Reality #2)... now add a skylight and vaulted ceilings.....can you say "hire a professional?"

Guest what? Now it's Monday- back to work. Reality #4- one weekend will turn into one month (or more). I probably STILL won't be done.

I'm okay with the room at this angle. You can't see the dust or dirt on the baseboards. Shoot, the walls even look clean. Reality #5- they're NOT. I could even say that the upper right hand corner looks that way because of the light in the room. It's NOT. It is an accumulation of many things that a little soap & water would greatly help....except for that whole height thing!

I'm okay from this end too, except- hmmm, what was I thinking with that one wall? Even painted the door AND air returns to match! I'm thinking that one wall is a weekend unto itself- kilz anyone?

But this is my favorite.... this is the only wall in my entire house that has absolutely NOTHING on it-Why is that? I'm not sure. What makes it all the more special? It's the first thing you see when you walk in my front door. I'm sure my friends and neighbors are overwhelmed with my creative design work- they'll be clammoring for me to come and decorate their homes any day now!

And you? What projects will you start... and not finish this weekend? I'm right there with ya'.

Go PATS!

Back Deck Clean Up

I have finally finished the front steps to my house and the smaller back deck (lower, larger decks and steps to go!). It looks so much better when I look out my slider now... no more black & green wood....in fact, the wood looks brand new. I wish, however, that I had never painted the railings white- it's an annual event every spring to give them a fresh coat. Guess I'll have to get around to that next! The pictures were taken at dusk so they may appear a little darker than it actually is..but still better than what it was!

This is the overall look...I still need to fill in with plants and some more containers, but it's coming along.

This is a fountain I bought years ago that unfortunately cracked last winter. Lucky for me, I was born one of two daughters and both of my parents believed in doing things yourself, and took pride in what they could accomplish- I am fortunate that they passed that drive and determination on to me (and I hope to pass the same on to my sons!).

So my week long project has been to power wash my decks and stairs outside-this has not been done in SEVERAL years and things were starting to look pretty filthy around here! So I begged one of my co-workers to drop the power washer off at my house (the thing is heavy!!) and I've been acquainting myself for the past few days with the finer points of power washing. 'Couple of hints...wear waterproof shoes, do NOT aim directly at the house at less than 6" away and not expect to get SOAKED, at 2 " not only will you remove the grime, but a goodly portion of the wood, and be careful if your 12 year old offers to help (who happens to be on the slender side)- the pressure can knock him back!!

Here are a few of the befores of one of the back decks...I'll load the afters tonight.

Yes... I attempted to do this at first, by hand, with a spray bottle of bleach and a hose. Let me tell you, I would still be there next April! Unfortunately, I did not unearth the "before" photos from my album (see previous post... aka..diaper bag!) but if you can envision that everything shown with regard to the furniture was once a very dark, traditional mahogany, Victorian dining set, then maybe that can take place of the befores. The chairs were covered with a very worn, dark green crushed velvet! I much prefer the new fabric. I have used it in my bathroom (photos to follow in a later post) and I think they turned out great. Much brighter and more me.

As a personal aside, this set was purchased for me about 10 years ago by my now EX husband at a time when I was into the dark, heavy & ornate Victorian style. The walls were painted a dark green on the bottom, with a cream color above the chair railing and a cut work, wallpaper border around the top. Let me tell you, the wallpaper border was a BEAR to remove...never again!

My then husband left four years ago, and slowly but surely, room by room I have started to reclaim my house in a brighter, more open look that works better for me. In the past few years, I worked on the enclosed porch, the master bath, the gardens (although we CANNOT mention my backyard!)and the largest undertaking thus far... this room.
So onward.... I have gone from dark green & cream walls, dark green velvet curtains, and mahogany furniture to this! I LOVE the new look and feel it is truly reflective of who I am. It's amazing what paint, time, and inspiration can do... not only for a room, but your outlook on life. I hope you enjoy looking at these photos as much as I enjoyed pulling it all together!

This is the view from the Great Room looking into the Dining Room.

This is the view on the opposite side looking in from the kitchen. At one time there were doors leading into the room on both sides- I took those down a long time ago and it really opened up the space.

My apologies for the weird angle on this one- the ceilings are 10 foot tall and getting a good shot is kinda' hard. One of the maintenance men I work with made the valance form for me, then I covered it in material to match the chairs. The hangings are done in a coordinating fabric (also used for the place mats I made) and have a glass bead fringe on the bottom that looks awesome when the morning light comes through. I was lucky enough to find the trim at 70% off when a fabric store was going out of business (gosh... will I miss them!!).

This is a better shot of the bottom of the front windows. The large stain glass piece I bought about 10 years ago at a local antique shop for $50 bucks (what a deal!). The two smaller pieces I bought on-line for half price at the Home Decorators site- $14 a piece, but the shipping blew that deal!

These are the chairs- I think they turned out great!

This is the "table scape" I leave set for the most part. I like to alternate some of my depression glass with my china pattern, and I just got the salt & pepper set from EBay last month! I made the place mats out of the same material used on the hangings on the valance.

This is the buffet wall with a part of my depression glass collection. I love the combination of the pinks and greens... it's a shame that I'm running out of room. However, I do have one more wall shelf for the top of the mirror that I'm saving. The shelves were purchased at Wal-Mart for $11 a piece. They were originally black, so I kilzed them, and applied 2 coats of paint to match the wall.

This is a close up of the buffet with some of my carnival glass collection. I "spruced up" the lamps by adding the same trim I used to trim out the mantel treatment.

This is the fireplace wall which opposes the buffet- it's looking a little stark due to the ceiling height...but my girlfriend is working on a watercolor for me to hang over the doorway to the great room (hey, Heide Marie...what's the status?)

And this is the china cabinet. Needless to say, this one piece took me the longest! I started out trying to tape around the fret-work on the front...JOKE. I ended up just slapping the paint on then scrapping the glass with a razor when it dried. A WHOLE lot easier!

Getting Started...

Well, I have been thinking of this whole "blog" thing for several months. If you had asked me 6 months ago what a blog was, I would have given you one of those "do I want to admit to ignorance or wing it" kinda' looks! Then one day, in a year long dining room remodel project, I was on-line looking for paint techniques and stumbled into One Woman's Cottage Life and have been hooked ever since (my sincere thanks to Kim for her beautiful and oh so inspiring site!).

That was a little over three months ago, and since then I have found so many wonderful and creative sites and people-there are some really talented women out there and I have truly been inspired. So thanks!! I hope I can return the favor myself, one day.

So now what? It's Friday and I can't wait to get home tonight and shoot my completed Dining Room. Unfortunately, when I started this project over a year ago, I didn't think to take "before" photos. I may have some laying around (wish I could say "I have all those photos cataloged in photo album Number 7" but the truth is they're in an old, Blues Clues diaper bag in my closet!). Hopefully I'll be able to load the "afters" this weekend.

After a five day Nor'Easter blowing through, the weekend is forecasted to be sunny and warm. Maybe I'll get a chance to clean up the garden as well. Hope you all have a wonderful weekend.
